Build it from source in about a minute — less time than most web apps spend loading their own spinner. Source version · 0.10.0 · Wayland & X11 ## Build from source The full app — daemon, panel, preview, and CLI — builds with GNU make. You need a C compiler, pkg-config, FFmpeg, PipeWire, Fontconfig and FreeType development packages, a system font, and SDL3 / SDL3_ttf for the panel; Clay is vendored. # clone the repository, then build: $ git clone https://github.com/mattmezza/cast.git $ cd cast $ make -j X11=1 WAYLAND=1 PANEL=1 $ ./cast --version $ sudo make install X11=1 WAYLAND=1 PANEL=1 PREFIX=/usr/local ## Distro packages Packaging is in progress. The source build is the supported path today; watch the roadmap for Flatpak and distro packages. # when packaged: $ flatpak install cast # arch / debian / fedora — see roadmap Requirements ## What it needs from your system. SuperScreencast is deliberately light — no runtime, no Electron, no GPU farm. If your desktop plays video, it can run SuperScreencast. - Display serverWayland or X11 session - AudioPipeWire - Virtual camerav4l2loopback kernel module - StreamingAny RTMP / RTMPS destination - Window managerAny — floating or tiling, it's a utility window First run ## Three commands to your first composition. 01 ### Start the daemon $ cast --headless SuperScreencast runs in this terminal independently of its windows, with the virtual camera privacy-paused. It may already capture your screen and camera; paused output does not mean capture is stopped. Daemon 02 ### Open the control panel $ cast panel A compact floating window: four output cards and compose views. Pick a source, choose a layout, anchor your camera. Panel 03 ### Go be on camera Start the virtual camera and select "Cast" in Zoom or Meet. Or hit record. Or set up streaming — it starts paused until you reveal. The floating preview shows exactly what goes out. Outputs ## That's the whole install. Free core, no account, no telemetry. Build it once and forget it's there — until you look great on a call. Pick a screen. Park your camera in a corner. SuperScreencast merges them into one clean, professional feed — and it shows up everywhere you present: as a webcam in your video calls, as a file on your disk, as a live stream. Set it up once. Send it anywhere. Your screen, camera, overlays, and backgrounds are arranged a single time. SuperScreencast delivers that arrangement to three independent outputs — each with its own pause, blur, and stop controls. No re-arranging your screen for the call, then again for the recording, then again for the stream. CamFor calls The composition shows up as a regular webcam in Zoom, Meet, or Teams — with your microphone in on the act if you want. Your colleagues will think you bought better lighting. Let them. Works as your webcam RecFor files Video and audio written straight to disk, as an ordinary video file. Cut and resume into the same file, on your countdown — no editor round-trip, no final_final_v3.mp4. A file on your disk StreamFor an audience Go live to one destination — Twitch, YouTube, wherever you stream. A new stream opens safely paused: revealing yourself to the world is a deliberate click, not a race against the timer. Twitch, YouTube & friends All three running at once — then you blur only the stream …because you just opened something private. The call and the recording never notice. Independent pause, freeze, and blur per lane is the whole point of SuperScreencast. Why it's different ## Built like the rest of your desktop — not a browser tab in a trench coat. R1 ### Native, actually A small, fast desktop app — not a website pretending to be one. It opens instantly, lives in a compact window that plays nicely with your window manager, and never spins a fan. No Electron. No 2 GB of RAM spent pretending to be software. R2 ### Adjust without stopping A compact control panel and a floating preview — small utility windows that fit beside your work. Change the camera size mid-recording, nudge an overlay during a call. Close them whenever you like: the engine keeps running, and nothing starts, stops, or pauses behind your back. R3 ### Privacy is a state, not a checkbox One action pauses everything: your audience sees a solid screen with your own message, and hears silence. Streams start paused — showing yourself is always a deliberate click, never an accident. And SuperScreencast never pretends a connected stream means people can see you. R4 ### Your keys, your pace Keyboard shortcuts for everything, and a command line for the rest. The engine runs quietly in the background — closing a window never starts, stops, or pauses anything behind your back. Privacy, demonstrated ## Blur it. Pause it. Reveal it on purpose. One click pauses everything: your audience sees a solid screen with your own message, and hears silence. Blur softens the moving picture; use solid pause for privacy. Resume brings everything back exactly as it was. Streams always start paused — revealing yourself is a deliberate click, never an accident. Live Blurred Paused Pause titles, subtitles, and colors are yours to configure. Simulated sample. Brb — back in five. Composition paused · audio silent Live 00:00:00 For keyboard people ## It runs quietly in the background. The panel is optional. SuperScreencast’s engine keeps working whether or not any window is open — your recording genuinely doesn’t care what you’re looking at. A native C application, drawn with the Clay UI library on SDL3 — no web view anywhere. That’s why it opens instantly, renders crisply at any display density, and idles without doing anything to your laptop’s temperature or battery. ### How does the virtual camera work? SuperScreencast publishes the composition to a V4L2 loopback device — a standard Linux mechanism. Conferencing apps see it as a normal webcam called “Cast”, so it works with anything that can pick a camera, not just the apps we list. ### How does screen capture work? Through the capture backends available on your session — PipeWire on Wayland, X11 natively — covering monitors, screen regions, and individual application windows. What can be hidden from the capture (like SuperScreencast’s own panel) depends on the backend, and the panel tells you honestly what’s possible rather than faking it. ### How does streaming work? SuperScreencast connects directly to one destination you configure, using the standard RTMP / RTMPS protocol that Twitch, YouTube, and most platforms speak. Your stream key lives in a file on your disk — the setup asks for its path, and the secret itself never appears in the panel, the config, or a screenshot of either. ### Can I skip the panel entirely? Yes. Every action is available through the cast command-line tool, and every setting lives in plain text configuration files. Script your whole setup if that’s your idea of a good evening. ### Is it really open source? SuperScreencast is developed in the open as a C project — you can build it yourself with GNU make, read exactly what it does, and verify the privacy claims above instead of taking our word for them. Questions ## The honest answers. ### Is the free version a demo, or the real thing? The real thing. Every layout, background, overlay, camera shape, and privacy state is in the free core — no time limit, no watermark, no “pro” nag. Streaming is also free. Pro adds cinematic zoom, local transcription and subtitles, and speaker notes. ### Do I need an account? No. Install it, pick your camera anchor, and go. There is no sign-up, no login, and nothing to unsubscribe from. ### Can I record and stream at the same time? Yes — any combination of the three outputs runs at once, each with its own pause, blur, and stop controls. A stream can be connected while your recording sits on a paused screen. ### Does SuperScreencast send anything to a server? No. Recordings are files on your disk, the virtual camera is a local device, and streaming goes directly from your machine to the destination you configure. There is no SuperScreencast cloud, and there never will be one to opt out of. ### Will it get along with my desktop setup? SuperScreencast is built for Linux — it runs on Wayland and X11, lives in small floating windows, and behaves in tiling window managers. The full system requirements are on the download page. ## Your next call deserves better than a webcam rectangle. The free core has every core composition feature included — nothing held back. Download for Linux See what’s next --- Privacy # Privacy SuperScreencast is built to keep your video, your audio, and your recordings on your machine. This page explains the small amounts of data this website and the product do involve. Draft — pending legal review Last updated · 2026 ### The website Static pages, no cookies, no analytics, no accounts. Nothing to configure and nothing to opt out of. ### The SuperScreencast app Capture, composition, recording, and the virtual camera run entirely on your machine. No telemetry leaves it. ### Streaming When you stream, video and audio go to the one destination you configured — not to us, not through us. 1 · The short version - The website uses no tracking. It is a set of static pages; it sets no cookies and runs no analytics or tracking scripts. - The application sends nothing to us. SuperScreencast works fully offline for capture, virtual camera, and recording, and reports no usage, crash, or diagnostic data. - Streaming goes where you point it. Media is transmitted only to the streaming destination you configured, using the stream key stored on your machine. - You hold the data. Recordings and configuration files live on your disk under your control; deleting them removes them. 2 · This website The pages under this domain are delivered as static files. They do not use cookies, fingerprinting, analytics services, or third-party embeds, and they do not require an account. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. Your browser sends requests to Google for those font files, including your IP address and browser request metadata. See the Google Fonts FAQ for the provider’s privacy information. Like any website, the hosting infrastructure may automatically process short-lived technical request logs (for example IP address, time, and requested page) for security and delivery purposes. [hosting provider and log-retention details — to be completed before launch] 3 · The SuperScreencast application SuperScreencast is a native Linux application that runs as a local daemon. It captures your screen, camera, and audio, composes them, and writes results locally: - Recordings are written to a directory you choose and never uploaded anywhere. - The virtual camera delivers video to applications on your own machine (for example a conferencing app) via a local video device; it does not transmit over the network by itself. - Configuration is stored in local files, session-only panel state included. Your panel layout and settings stay on your machine. - No telemetry. SuperScreencast has no usage tracking, no crash reporting, and no update phone-home. The SuperScreencast control panel and preview are local windows. Opening, closing, or navigating them does not transmit anything. 4 · Streaming destinations and stream keys When you start streaming, SuperScreencast transmits the composed video and audio mix to the single RTMP/RTMPS destination you configured. We do not operate a relay, do not see the stream, and do not receive a copy. Authentication to your streaming destination uses a stream key or key file. SuperScreencast stores only the path to that key file in its configuration; the secret itself never appears in configuration files, the control panel, or the preview window. The key is read from disk and used solely to authenticate against the destination you configured. What you broadcast, and whether your audience has consented to being recorded or streamed, is your responsibility as the broadcaster. We recommend treating the privacy pause and blur controls as part of that discipline — they exist so that revealing a composition is always an explicit action. 5 · Pro purchases and contact Pro is sold as a perpetual license. [payment processor, billing data processed, and account model — to be completed once the purchase flow is final] Pro purchases use Stripe Checkout. The payment service processes payment confirmation and stores the purchase email and license file. License-delivery and recovery emails are sent via SMTP through the configured email provider. [purchase, license, and email-retention details — to be completed before launch] If you contact us by email, we process the data you provide solely to answer your enquiry. 6 · Your rights Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to access, rectify, and delete personal data, to object to or restrict processing, to data portability, and to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority (in Switzerland, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner, FDPIC). To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@superscreencast.com. 7 · Changes to this policy If the website or product changes in ways that affect this policy — for example introducing optional telemetry or an account system — we will update this page and the date above. We will not add data collection silently. --- Roadmap # What's shipped, what's next. SuperScreencast is developed in the open.
